Project : Grand Burstin Hotel, Folkestone

Client : Britannia Hotels

Timescale : June – September 2023

Value : £700k

Summary :

This large, impressive hotel structure overlooking the picturesque Folkestone harbour was in desperate need of refurbishment.

The external render system, dating back to the mid 1980’s, had reached the end of its usable life and required complete replacement.

The roof structure of the underground car park, consisting of encased steelwork, had spalled in numerous locations due to water ingress.

Refurbishment :

JDF RS Limited removed the existing render to the rear elevations, undertaking concrete and masonry repairs to the substructure. A new STO render system was applied including new ventilation grilles.

In order to reduce refurbishment costs, JDF RS Limited pinned sections of the existing un-bonded render using Helifix render pins before applying a Sika coating system.

The car park beams and columns were broken back to the embedded steelwork and repaired including the addition of new steel support beams.

An abseil survey was carried out to assess the condition of the remaining elevations of the hotel and work is due to start on the continued refurbishment within the next few months.
